Question: data volume
-
In average, when you navigate during one hour with the setting to "online navigation", what volume of data will that phone actually download?
-
@Drabslab I have never wondered about that. I have a subscription where it doesn't matter. Not even abroad. But have you looked into it?
Edit: I looked it up in My Vodafone. Yesterday, I navigated all day (11 hours online with all maps downloaded for the areas I traveled through). That adds up to 416MB. And that also includes some WhatsApp and Facebook usage.

@Drabslab, If I remember this tonight, I will look into my other phone. Our 3 day trip 3 weeks ago should give a decent average. But honestly, I don't think it is much. Especially not if you use downloaded maps.

@Drabslab This might give you an idea when averaged out with other people's data usage:
- 11 days touring where the app was used approximately 4 hours per day on average (days off, not leading, used Google Maps a couple of times, app went offline occasionally, etc)
- it may also have included evening route planning (but that data may be associated with web app, and not MRA - MRA will know!)
- data by MRA app: used 1.7GB
So I make that 1.7GB/44 hours = 39Mb / hour.
Reasonably efficient, I'd say.

Thank all of you for the replies.
and using the opportunity: my apologies for being so absent here the last 8 months or so. Life has not been all to friendly lately (but we are all fine healthwise, which I guess is the most important thing). However, I missed all the testing
Anyway, back to the subject.
Many people here in Belgium have a 4GB a month limit on their data traffic.
The current options in the navigation map are "online" or "offline" and I wonder a bit what that means (it is probably somewhere in a manual).
If online would mean that map sections are still downloaded while a downloaded map is also available on the phone, then I would favour a "hybrid" mode where all map data is taken from the local copy, and only fast changing data (such as traffic jams) are downloaded.
In addition, a local map makes that the navigation also functions in area's with poor network coverage.
and it could have an influence on battery life on some phones?
But perhaps I have just missed to much info lately

Well, as you've said yourself, health is the most important thing in life! That being said, good to have you back here dude! Much more required testing coming up...

Said earlier, health is important. Maps downloaded means navigation uses the downloaded maps and traffic is consumed online. You're right there!

@Drabslab, We have 2 seperate things:
- Offline maps: these will have prio above live downloaded maps. So if you have offline maps available, no maps will be downloaded live.
- Offline navigation: this means that explicitly NO data is downloaded AT ALL (in the navigation module that is, in search options before starting navigation this setting will take no effect). You need to start your routes from the downloads folder. For this to work, of course you also need offline maps.
This means that of you have offline maps, but offline navigation disabled, the app WILL use your internet connection for route calculation, traffic data, and things like that, but NOT for maps).

@Drabslab I was out for about 8 hrs yesterday. Maps were previously downloaded. The app used 47MB of mobile data.
