How to reverse route?
-
Hi
I'm planning a route via the roundtrip option. The route itself is good, but I need to reverse it (some of the mates want to exit after 3/4, because they are close to home then).
I'm struggeling with this task actually and maybe somebody can point me into the right direction.
-
I save the route, but am not asked to set an individual route name.
How do I do that? -
In the App I cannot find the option to reverse the route.
Where can I do that? -
I tried the route lab and found an option to reverse the route.
After that the route was totally shot. The distance increased from 176km to 220km and the route contains turnarounds and stupid circles.
No chance to anyhow correct this 80 waypoints.
What did I do wrong here? -
I tried several times to change the route in route lab.
Before editing, I had to give a route name.
I used the same name every time.
In my route folder I now have several different routes with the same name.
No chance to differentiate. If using an existing name, the normal expectation is to be asked, if I want to replace the existing file.
What am I doing wrong here?
Sorry for so many questions.
Right now I seem not to be able to just automatically create a round tour with the direction I need.Cheers

Thomas@guenniguenzelsen You need at least a Gold subscription in Routelab for the functionality to reverse a created route. First, save the roundtrip you've generated. Then, I would copy the original and subsequently select 'Reverse' in the toolkit menu.
After that, you will need to check all route points to ensure they are on the correct side of the road. If a route point is on a road with split lanes and it's on the wrong side of the road, you'll get a very strange route. By the way, you'll find this in the help files too!

Hi Rob
Thanks for your reply.
I have the Gold subscription and followed the way you described.
But the result is unusable. I would need to check and correct 80 waypoints. But if the App can calculate a route in one direction correctly, it shall be able to calculate the other way round without screwing totally up, or am I getting this wrong?

I think that I am correct when I say that both the website and mobile app roundtrip generators always generate routes in a clockwise direction.

Yes, but for this tour I need the route counterclockwise, which seems not to be possible

@guenniguenzelsen Yes, it is not possible to simply change the direction, but with relatively little effort, it is possible to reverse the route.
Create a circular route in the app, then edit the route track (assigning a name at the same time).
Then change the direction in the toolkit.Of course, you'll need to quickly check the points which the system has set, but you'll quickly see if there are any unnecessary detours. If so, simply delete the unwanted points and within 5 minutes you'll have a fun tour

@guenniguenzelsen you only have to check, where the route has other directions. If you insert the original route in the map, so that you see them both, you can directly see where it differs.

Of course tracks cannot be simply reversed. On the Motorbeurs in Utrecht I spoke to a customer with a similar question. His reason for wanting to reverse a roundtrip was to choose a way to avoid as much direct sunlight in the face as possible. I am not sure many people have the same wish, but a toggle (sorry @Corjan-Meijerink
) for clockwise or counterclockwise in the roundtrip generator might make sense to many people. -

You should definitely check every point after using Reverse. It doesn't take long - you won't need to correct all of them.
Here's one good reason why:
- if one of your waypoints is on a dual carriageway (or other one-way road system), the router will not magically move your waypoint to the other side of the dual carriageway. It will route you up the (now) wrong side and back down again. That doubling back could make quite a long route!
And another:
- good practice for positioning waypoints is to place them after junctions rather than before (so the vital junction announcement isn't lost by the waypoint being announced). When you reverse a route all those carefully placed waypoints are now before the junctions. Arghh!
