Offline OSM map details
-
Hello to community! I am relatively new member and purchased Gold and Next abonnements. Recently I try it out the next app and find some restrictions. I was using Garmin up to now on a motorcycle so I am used to use the maps offline, not relying on network connections. I downloaded the map of my region and noticed that navigation is running ok in offline mode, but if I only want to ride without guidance, but I still want to look to the map, then I don't see any details (smaller roads, buildings etc.). If I zoom it in, it will only get blurry. I read in one post that downloaded maps are HERE from Garmin. But in no navigation mode and still offline there are OSM maps shown. But why not in detail? What is the point? Why cant we see also HERE maps offline not navigating, or why are OSM maps not downloaded for offline use? I don't always need guidance but I still want to see where I am and in offline mode. Or is there some setting for this and I don't know. Thx for help.

@Marcel-Tasner the navigation next app uses the Here map nooit the OSM

@Marinus-van-Deudekom Hi! Yes, this is clear, but if you dont navigate and you have map shown, then it shows OSM map and you must be online to see all details. Why are offline, if you dont navigate, not shown HERE maps? Do somebody know the answer?

@Marcel-Tasner mine shows the Here map online and offline. But it does not show the map layer that is only shown when you're navigating. Is that what you mean?

@Marcel-Tasner Hi, I think it is related to "freies Fahren". A proper map when not following a track or route would be very nice to have. Maybe MRA is working on it already but since weeks quiet silence regarding further development. The good thing is we have the option to select the right app for different needs. Anyway I don't like to switch apps while driving. Let's see if there will be something like that in future. The My Route app is good for routing if I would understand the usage of Silverfox controller. But thats my issue. Thomas

@Thomas-Neumeyer Hi Thomas! Yes, exactly, you know the word for this, "freies Fahren" ...offline without routing. Yes, I can open for example Maps.me, like you said with other app, and have the solution, but why if I already have HERE map local on my phone. It only needs to be shown. Perhaps they will come with some new possibility.

@Marinus-van-Deudekom Hi! Yes, the maps are shown, but if you zoom in OSM map to, lets say 10m, then you dont see nothing... Thomas has got my point in the post

@Marcel-Tasner because you have the map in the cache memory of the phone, that's why it disappears when you zoom in.
It would be nice to use the already offline maps downloaded onto the phone, not to use internet for this feature. -
Yes, I agree, no matter which map layer you choose, you can’t see the details. I’ve downloaded UK offline maps region, whilst this work when used for navigating, when simply trying to display the offline map it doesn’t work, no matter which map layer (OSM, MyRoute-app Default, MyRoute-app Street, HERE (Gold), etc..)
Screenshot below shows the cached part of the map with details, but as I pan away from this, you don’t see any details.
Why can’t the offline maps be used for both navigation and browsing?

@Rajp said in Offline OSM map details:

That would be a great and positive change to this app...

@Adrian-Avram Thats definitely right. Some statement from the creator and coder would be nice. Are they working on it? What is the next big change or improvement planned?

@Thomas-Neumeyer In another topic "speed and speed limit display" there is a discussion about showing the speed limit during the free ride. It was replied few days ago this will be implemented in summer this year. So, hopefully this speed limit will also work offline and then I think it is necessary to link the map offline for free ride. Or, perhaps I am mistaken.
