Mobile data usage

Why does the navigation app use so much mobile data even with offline maps and not actively navigating? Would offline navigation solve this but if so what functionality could I lose?

@Steve-Lane Define heavy data usage! At the very least, what you save on data is fetching and rendering the map data. When driving offline, you mis traffic-aware route calculation, traffic information, and that kind of thing. I don't care with an unlimited data plan.

@Rob-Verhoeff I used about 100Mb in 2 hours yesterday just displaying my position on the map which I have stored off line. Over a 2 week riding holiday with longer days that would use several Gb of roaming data just to display a map, presumably even more with active navigation? It seems excessive given that a standalone sat nav device achieves the same using zero data.

@Steve-Lane Are you sure you’ve enabled offline in the navigation menu?

@Steve-Lane if you're navigation a route and switch to offline Navigating it won't cost you a dime. You don't have access to real time traffic info but who cares, you're having fun
