Mobile data usage

Why does the navigation app use so much mobile data even with offline maps and not actively navigating? Would offline navigation solve this but if so what functionality could I lose?
@Steve-Lane Define heavy data usage! At the very least, what you save on data is fetching and rendering the map data. When driving offline, you mis traffic-aware route calculation, traffic information, and that kind of thing. I don't care with an unlimited data plan.

@Rob-Verhoeff I used about 100Mb in 2 hours yesterday just displaying my position on the map which I have stored off line. Over a 2 week riding holiday with longer days that would use several Gb of roaming data just to display a map, presumably even more with active navigation? It seems excessive given that a standalone sat nav device achieves the same using zero data.

@Steve-Lane Are you sure you’ve enabled offline in the navigation menu?

@Steve-Lane if you're navigation a route and switch to offline Navigating it won't cost you a dime. You don't have access to real time traffic info but who cares, you're having fun

@Rob-Verhoeff No, I hadn't as I was not navigating and assumed I was just displaying a stored map using GPS info only. Offline, as has been said, means you don't get traffic updates but I'm happy to skip those and use offline navigation.

Just curious, what is using 100mb in 2 hour under MRA? It sounds a lot indeed, but if you have everything enabled, turned on, connected, etc. i can imagine it uses that much data.

I do. I want it all. Real time traffic info, low data usage and offline map usage.
There is one thing which makes it not that big of a problem. The real time traffic info provided by Here isn't that good. So, offline navigation will do the job.@Nomko-Nomden The data usage of MRA is not a constant value. One day it can be just 200 MB for a whole day with online navigation and the next day it can be 400-600 MB for around 4 hours. Why it differs that much, i don't know.

@M.-Schrijver if you want it all. You're bound to get disappointed. In Dutch: als je het onderste uit de kan wil, krijg je de deksel op je kop.
With all of the limitless data abo's in Europe I say whatever suits you will do.
Have fun don't worry about anything -
We've had this discussion before.
Good Realtime traffic info, proper route riding, low data usage and offline navigation at once is possible. The platform must support this offcourse and it seems the Here platform doesn't. -
