Something of an old topic I know.

Just been out on a 40 mile test run on local roads and decided to use MRA linked to my Chigee - primarily to test the revised battery usage on my android phone. I designed the route and put my points bang on the road to avoid those 25m diversions up someone's garden path.
Surprisingly I still got a couple of those mini diversions? So, when I got in I checked on my PC. Yes, I did write it on Here maps. Yes, the points were bang on the road. So why the issue.
When you zoom in one can often see the black route is not actually coincident on the road itself. So where should the point be placed? Road or black line. I had placed all my points bang on the road. To help me understand I expanded the points on the route by another 25 (using the toolkit) and then took another look. Ah, all these additional points are on the black route line and not necessarily on the road.

I then figured a possible easier way of designing a faithful route.

    1. Place a limited number of shaping points to get the outline of your route then change their colour from blue to whatever, say yellow.
    2. Use the expand function in the toolkit to add another 25 or more shaping points depending on how long your route is. All of these are effortlessly placed exactly on the black line. Now look back at your route. There are now a small number of original yellow points of variable placement accuracy plus 25 blue expansion points bang on the black line.
    3. Delete all your yellow yellow points instead of the faff of moving them about.

Obviously you need to be accurate with your start and finish waypoints. I guess it would not hurt to also change a few of those shaping points to waypoints.

I wonder if anyone else has adopted this semi automated point placement and how it has worked out for them on a longer trip with many waypoints/shaping points.

@Jan-Smerke I do have your issue too. But I don't run in problems if I do place my routepoints always exactly onto the black route line; ignoring if the route line is in the middle of the street, or not.
There is a reason, why a route line is not exactly on the drawn road on map. Sometimes at gorges, high mountain passes etc. position from gps signal will be distracted slightly. Therefore, drawn road on map is not hit exactly.

      Nothing is impossible ;-)

If your waypoints are placed on the road. Then they are placed correct.
Be aware don't place them on crossings, on places where roads crosses a highway (bridges). If possible not on roads or parts of the roads where the lane directions are split (like highways). This can cause diversions.

            Hi Marinus,
Thank you for your interest. Here is the route. I have been tinkering with the route before my post on here so not sure how revealing it will be but here it is. Most issue were between points 4 and 9

              Why all those Viapoints?
If you miss a viapoint without noticing it. You will send back endless.

Hi @Jan-Smerke have had a look at the shared route & can see no issues, no mini diversions
As you correctly state this revised route is probably not going to reveal the cause of the issue.

I did notice the shared route seems to be set to route using OSM & not Here which is not ideal if planning to navigate with MRA
I know you said the original map was saved as routing with Here so this routing change is probably one of the revisions you made

As @M.-Schrijver says placing points near junctions or side roads is a common issue that can lead to mini diversions. It is far more important to avoid this misplacement on side or adjacent roads than it is to place the point directly on the correct path / road.Navigation systems will generally cope okay with reasonable placement errors, they will automatically try to route via the nearest road.

Examples below show how mini diversions can easily occur ( I have just played with point 4 in your route)
                6a1f927f-ad75-4420-874e-acecd92c0999-image.png
Different navigation systems have different tolerances to what they consider a reasonable placement error.
I have found MRA navigation is very tolerant to misplacement of points off the intended road, a Garmin XT however a lot less tolerant
All navigations systems will have a problem if points are placed near side roads, they have no idea if you wish to take the side road or not
