Homograph s. Lösung für das IPhone
-

@Corjan-Meijerink are the numbers in announcements in brackets?
I found this in the web.
...that when reading a newspaper aloud with the iPAD, special characters such as brackets were read as "homograph start, brackets open, homograph end" brackets close. -

But typically you want those characters there so the speech synthesis engine understands hoe the sentence needs to be pronounced. Interpunction and reading characters are quite important
Imagine reading all the form messages without interpunction. It would be a nightmare for you and so it would be for a speech engine

For your information, iOS Version 16.5.1 (c) from today still has this problem.

For your information, the TomTom Apps have the same problem with "Homograph".
We need more pressure on Apple, please use this site to complain.

@Corjan-Meijerink
Yesterday I was saying that the TomTom app GoRide has the same problem, and today there was already an update from TT.
I tried it out today, before the update there was still the Homograph announcement, after the update it was gone.
So, there is probably a solution that you can apply in the app, unfortunately I can't say what they changed. Maybe there is a solution from Apple. -

https://www.giga.de/tipp/ios-17-beta-installieren-so-gehts/
and all others who are bothered by the homograph iphone problem and don't want to wait until September:iOS 17 seems to fix the problem.
Anyone who wants can sign up for the Apple beta program for free: https://beta.apple.com/de/welcome
After approval by Apple, install iOS 17 Public Beta in the iPhone folder "General/Software update".
Warning: my file was over 6 GB in size - I recommend using your own WLAN for downloading.
Here is a link for more tips:
https://www.giga.de/tipp/ios-17-beta-installieren-so- gehts/
The app "Apple Developer" as recommended on giga.de is NOT required! From this point I used the guide:
"Falls das nicht funktioniert, versucht diesen Weg:"
(it's in the text below)Please back up important data before updating!
Installed the beta for two weeks so far with no problems.
Before that I spent hours tinkering with the settings under iOS 16.x, only switching to English helped here (iOS 16.4 & 16.5) -

Just tested iOS 16.6. The „Homograph“ is still alive! Oh what a pitty

We will support different voices in a future (not known schedule) update. Now the default voice for the text-to-speech engine is the only one we support.

it would be nice to have a voice that can cope with place names a bit better. Its very often totally impossible to guess from the audio what city/street/place the voice is actually intending to say

@Matt If you had Ver. 16.6. 21 days ago, can you already test iOS Ver. 17? Where it should be removed.

Was meint ihr hierzu?Viele Grüße.

Tom@Tom-Johann, funny detail: my Google Maps showed the EXACT same problem concerning the loudness of the voice... If not playing music, you just turn up the volume of the radio/headset, but when playing music that is of course no option. Then if an instruction is given, the music ducks, but the voice is still not loud enough to overcome the music. GMaps showed the exact same thing during my holiday (I used it in my car, BT connected to my car radio).
The Homograph error is already established to be a problem in some IOS versions. The old app (and many other nav apps) has it's own internal speech synthesis. The new app relies on the OS for that. I am not sure whether the voice instruction itself originates from the app or from the HERE platform. It likely contains some intonation data that gets misinterpreted by the IOS speech synthesis. The MRA devs or the HERE devs could probably strip those, but that would mean loss of voice quality for everyone. Having an own embedded speech synthesis would likely be more flexible, but probably not easy to combine with the HERE platform. It is a chosen direction that is likely not easy to change. Google around, or search for earlier messages in this forum. There seem to be IOS voices that do not show (or speak) this problem.

As written somewhere from me, the TT GoRide-App had the same problem with Homegraph and they fixed it internal (without an Apple update).
But hopefully Apple will fix it with iOS 17. -
@Peter-Schiefer, I think you need to realise it is not my software
I have no affiliation with MyRoute-app.
I am not aware of a new voice, but yes improvements have been made to how voice guidance is given. Not on the voice itself, that's an OS thing. I am not denying something could perhaps be done by MRA to prevent the homograph problem, but you need to realize it is ultimately an IOS bug. It is entirely possible that other companies, with undoubtedly a larger dev team, have found a workaround for it. I heard recently that also TomTom has the same problem. Why not ask the bug-owner to solve the bug? In the meantime, what I understood from other users using IOS, the problem is solved by choosing a different voice in your IOS settings. You will find details by searching in this forum.
I have not heard this before. Best thing to do is to send some crashreports to the dev team, along with a description of the problem (at what time it happens and under what circumstances).
