Conversion with Google Maps/Zumo XT
-
Newbie using MRA, grateful for some help, having some issues in using Google Maps as plotting map on the website and then downloading and exporting to Drive for Zumo XT, sometimes works, but not always, and if I re-open a route on the website it says "Only works in Tom Tom" very briefly when I open the route.
I have been saving as GPX 1.1 is that correct?
Any pointers or instructions gratefully received.
Thanks in advance -
@MD_Clarke_Hicks Plotting is done in OSM, TomTom or Here (not in Google Maps), depending on the map you have chosen.
Google Maps is used as an overlay, not as a map to plot routes. It is another way of looking at the data and display of the map that is used for plotting. Other overlays (more ways of looking at the map) are also possible.
It is possible to use Google Streetview to check the plotted route. Just click the Streetview button on the map (left side).

@MD_Clarke_Hicks It's not an answer to your question, but good to know: if you have received a route that is made e.g. in the Map used by TomTom, you can compare how the route would be in the Here or OSM map by using Toolkit/Compare route and there you can resolve any differences (but you still can't use the official Google Map, that's just an overlay).

Thanks in advanceThe message you receive is because you are using the Open StreetMap as the planning map with motorcycle chosen as your transport mode.
You need to use the HERE planning map for exporting to your Garmin. The Google Map is an overlay map. Think of the overlay maps as clear sheets with extra information that you place over the top of the planning map. -
@Nick-Carthew ok thanks, so if i use the Here Maps to plan and save the route, when I export, ready to send to Garmin Drive, which version should i use? GPX1.0, 1.1 or 1.2?
Thanks -
@MD_Clarke_Hicks use the Here map. Make shure that all the viapoints and shapingpoints are exactly ON the route. Export it using the Drive app file format 1.2
If the points are not placed Wright the XT will mess up the route. Be shure that you have placed a routingpoint every 4 or 5 km, depending on the road type -
@Marinus-van-Deudekom great thanks for the tip, i think i was possibly also leaving too bigger gaps between points.
-
@MD_Clarke_Hicks The XT has a way of it's own looking at imported routes. You'll have to force the thing to do what you want it to do.
-
@MD_Clarke_Hicks exporting as 1.2 will only show the via points (hand shape). 1.1 will show shaping (balloon shape) and via points.
-
@Nick-Carthew ok thanks, so 1.1 is the one to use?
-
@MD_Clarke_Hicks 1.1 is the version I would use, others prefer 1.2. It depends on how you’ve created your route. If you have used several via points for coffee and lunch stops and maybe some scenic viewpoints, using a 1.2 might suffice. Now that you know the difference, have a play around.
