Different services need different bandwidths.
A phone call needs a synchronous two way connection - not easy in the middle of nowhere.
The same for web browsing, but it's asynchronous, so slightly better - you can request a page and wait say 60s for a reply.
But if you're ever in the middle of nowhere and need to contact someone then SMS (not Whatsapp, Chat, FB, etc) is the most efficient way to transmit a very small amount of data.
In the UK you can use SMS to contact the emergency services, but you need to pre-register:

Very useful if you're in the mountains.
And yes, I know some high-end phones now have satellitte connectivity, but I'm thinking about a normal person in the middle of the Scottish Highlands. It will take a few years before that is ubiquitous.
