Voice directions (tried two different voices) will ONLY say 'at the roundabout, take the first exit, whichever exit was indicated on the screen. Meant that could not trust voice directions and had to check screen to confirm which exit to take.

One route that I had planned on a PC then used on my android phone started taking me to some strange locations along the toute - e.g., up little dead end lanes. When I stopped to check, somehow a 15-waypoint route now had 75 waypoints! Stripped out most of these and cut nearly an hour from the journey time. This only happend once.

I assume you are using offline maps? Update them. This known problem has been solved, but depending on the map version you have, you must update it.

This is literally unheard of. Do you have screenshots of the route in the planner and on the phone?

Off-line maps for all areas I was going through were downloaded last week of May 2024. I have roaming on my phone contract so at least some of the time I will have been on line - probably a majority of the time. Not once in all my travels throughout France, Belgium, Germany and Austria did the voice guidence offer anything other than 'at the roundabout take the FIRST exit' when approaching a roundabout.
Re. the additional waypoints. That seemed to be a one off. I will try and find the versions you suggest when I have time. -
