I think the Zumo XT was developed by Garmin for use with Garmin Drive. That's why I think the MRA developers should focus on that if they want to solve the problem.
In any case, it would help a lot if MRA now writes a knowledge article about the application of the XT in combination with Apple Mac.
Your clues from this and the other topic can contribute nicely to this.

For what it’s worth, here’s something lifted from a Garmin webpage:

Transferring GPX Files From Your Computer

Apple computers may require additional third-party software, such as Android File Transfer, to read and write files on this device.
If you have already created routes that you want to use on your device, you can transfer GPX files directly from your computer.
Connect the device to your computer (Connecting the Device to Your Computer).
The device appears as a portable device.
On your computer, open the file browser.
Select a GPX file.
Select Edit > Copy.
Browse to the GPX folder on the device.
Select Edit > Paste.

It seems that thinking in terms of MTP in relation to Apple is a bit pointless as that is a Microsoft protocol and the reference to Android Transfer Protocol (AFT) in the above suggests that the XT is Android based. For Garmin to go down such a route seems bizarre to me, and only bound to invite potential conflicts left, right and centre. Given that both Microsoft and Apple desktops and laptops are essentially ‘universal computers’, each capable of running Windows or macOS with relatively little fuss, to have adopted Android seems a major faux pas in terms of inter-operability. Google have even made a clusterwhatnot out of that between their own ChromeOS and Android! (I suspect short term ‘bottom line’ considerations on the part of bean counters have come into play all round, to the detriment of such worthless things as versatility, flexibility and creativity🥴.)

It appears quite possible to achieve mac/XT communication at drive level, but only via one application at a time? In which case, installing AFT and making sure any conflicting application or service is stopped before use might be the way to go here (with heavy emphasis on the stopping of those other apps & services)?

Out of curiosity, I have got myself looking at an issue that doesn’t affect me at all, and is very unlikely to (I probably need to get out more!) Personally, I think the dedicated sat nav has a rather limited future and my current Zūmo 390 will very likely be my last. Spend the money on tyres and petrol I say!

if you want to see the files on your Zumo, you will have to do this with a separate program. For example Android File Transfer. In all cases, other programs may not occupy the Zumo.

I have managed to get my route/track/POI to the ZUMO XT in the following steps:

design your route in MRA on the MacBook and save it.
When it is saved the route will be in your archive
take the device (iPhone or IPad) which is connected with your ZUMO XT using GARMIN Drive
If no device is connected, you first have to arrange this. You have to choose to connect your iPhone or your iPad.
If connection is made and the ZUMO XT is switched on you can transfer route/tracks/POI with IPhone of iPad with the MRA app
Open the MRA app on the Iphone or iPad
Go to MyRoutes
Open the route you want to upload to the ZUMO XT
push on 'Page menu' in the top right corner
Select 'save as'
I always choose then .gpx 1.1 (track, POI)
Choose in the following pop up menu the option 'GARMIN Drive'
Now the selected route/track will be uploaded to the ZUMO XT
If you have uploaded the track to the ZUMO XT, now let the ZUMO XT calculate your route.
Make sure recalculation is switched off in the ZUMO XT

This should do the trick.

I've tried this and it seems to work!
I have to place these .gpx files in a directory where I can find them with the (in Dutch) 'bestanden' app and then I can send them to the Drive app and then that app will send the .gpx files to my ZUMO XT.

If the above means you are using an iPad then use the Chrome Browser.
This will allow you to simply download the GPX Beta XT file and then once it it downloaded it will automatically give you the “Open In” prompt where you can select the Garmin Drive App.
If the Drive App is not showing the first time you do this select “More” and choose the Drive App.
It will then always be available.

Safari will force you to save the file to a location and will not give you the prompt to “Open In”.
Therefore you have to go looking for the file.

@Steve-Lynch Thanks, but I'm not using an iPad, I'm using a MacBook and an iPhone to transfer the gpx file to my Garmin XT
Alas, this Garmin Drive App is only available for iPhone and iPad

Likewise I was having issues with transferring routes from my iMac to my Zumo XT.

Option One:
Copying and pasting the .gpx file using Android file transfer didn't work for me, the Zumo didn't report a new route being imported or show it in my saved routes. (Perhaps you have to put this route in a specific folder?)

Option Two:
Use the Export function, failed, got the following error:
"Device could not be found or written to. Please confirm that the device is actually connected and working properly"

It was and is, but didn't transfer!

Option Three:
Save as as .gpx 1.0 (track. POI), find saved .gpx file, email to myself, open email on iPhone, Send to Garmin Drive, Open Zumo XT, import new track, convert track to route.

This works but when you go to access the route it says "Editing this trip will discard the current route settings and calculate a standard route"
It seems to give you a good route but it's lost the waypoints, however it is an accurate route.

Option Four:
Export as .gpx 1.0 (route, track, POI), (Then follow the same procedure of email to yourself, Garmin Drive etc) when imported it recalculates the route but does seem to retain the route chosen and the waypoints.

Question:
If I change waypoints to shaping points will it still 'force the Zumo to pick a route I've plotted (as long as I add enough points)?

Note: I also tried taking it back into Basecamp and transferring to the Zumo but this gave me weird and crazy routes. I think this might have been a mismatch between the maps as I've just been able to transfer the map to my iMac. This ability had been missing until recently from Garmin Express.

In theory you could use MRA Web on Chrome on the iPhone and the Garmin Drive App on your iPhone to do the transfer using the GPX1.1 (BETA Route, Track, POI)
Plan on the MacBook, switch to the iPhone to do the transfer.
Use the Chrome Browser as Safari will not give you the “Open In” option for the GPX file and will force you to “Save to Files”.

If you need to create a collection on the XT you have to do it using the Explore Website not the Explore App and you must also have the Garmin Drive App open as well.
Then on the XT if you “Sync” using Explore the collection you created on explore.garmin.com will pull into the XT.
Why we can’t just create a Collection directly on the XT is ridiculous. 🤨
