segments around altitude display

I noticed that 5.1.0-462 has introduced "segments" around the new altitude indicator. One of them is red while the rest is white. Which segment is red keeps changing, I suppose in relation to the device's orientation? So - what does this signify? Is red where north is? What's the purpose of this display - am I missing something obvious?
