Using Garmin Smartlink to upload route
-
I have been watching a video that shows how to upload a route directly to a Garmin 590 (plus others) from a mobile phone. I have access to a Samsung and IPhone 7 and have tried both (even though it says Android wont work), and cannot get it to work. Anyone else managed to do it?

@D-A-Wakefield I can tell you that the iPhone won't be able to do it. I have little to no knowledge of Android though.

The Garmin smartlink function doesn’t work for file transfer for IPhone or android phones anymore.
Therefore you must use an USB OTG cable connection to transfer a route or a track to your Zumo 590.
First save your route as *. gpx file. This file will be stored in you download folder on you device by default.
Then use a file manager to copy your file via USB connection to your Garmin. The file must be stored in the GPX folder on your device. -
I didn't think it would work without a computer, but when searching came across a video from Myroute
https://support.myrouteapp.com/support/solutions/articles/12000050942-instruction-video-exporting-via-garmin-smart-link-iphone-
that shows it working. -
@D-A-Wakefield Well I stand corrected. I knew nothing about the Smartlink. I’m glad that I’m a TomTom user, adding routes is so much easier.

I use Smartlink to transfer from MRA to my Zumo 396. From time to time I need to repeat the process. But it still beats using a USB cable. The 590 should work too.

@Lars-Jensen
No, it doesn’t work with the Smartlink app. I own a 590 and I have tried it several times with my android phone and my IPad. Therefore I use an USB OTG cable for data transfer with my mobile devices. As the 590 came to the market it was possible to transfer routes from one 590 to an another 590. But this functionality was removed from the device for unknown reasons. Therefore I think this has affected the data transfer via Smartlink too.

@Reinhard-32 there is still the option to transfer routes between Garmon sat navs, used it with my Nav VI and a 390. Thanks for the cable pointer, will try that from my android phone.
-
@D-A-Wakefield That is probably possible but not with the specific Zumo 590 satnav. This model ist different from the 39x and BMW models.
-
@Reinhard-32 I have a 590 as well, I'll give it try to transfer maps.
-
Well it does work upto a point. I can transfer from the 590 to the NAV VI, but not the other way around .
