  1. First thing with the XT is to start the route about half a mile way from where you are. The unit will navigate you to the first point. This stops the unit getting confused and taking you straight to the end.

  2. On an out and back route like you have shown put at least one via point (Hand) at the furthest point in the out route so that if you have to skip a waypoint (shaping point in Garmin speak) it won't recalculate and take you back to the end.

  3. I use an XT and like it but there are lots of oddities with it compared to older Garmin units. I've got used to it but it drove me mad for the first 6 months I had it and I have a BMW nav IV and two 3XX garmin units as well.   4. I've found the combination of the XT MRA for planning and the Garmin Drive app great for creating bespoke on the fly routes while I'm on tour.
