Battery drain when navigating
-
Yesterday I wanted to use MRA Next Beta for navigating and tracking a tour. Phone was 92% when I left home. Wirelessly charging using the QuadLock charger, which I always use on the bike. It allways charges during the ride, so never drains.
After 30m I noticed my phone only had 52% left... Rebooted the phone and resumed the tracklog (I love this feature <3). But rebooting didn't help. MRA kept draining the battery. At 45% I stopped navigating with MRA Next, downloaded the .gpx and used a differerent app to navigate.. however I did use MRA Next for track recording... That worked... Battery started to charge again...
Anybody having the same issue?!
Google Pixel 6 Pro, Android 13, QuadLock wireless charging on R1200GS.

@Rolf-Aalders Did you use the latest build 3.2.8-151? In that version some issues regarding battery drainage should be resolved!
-
@Rolf-Aalders Happy you love the tracklog recovery feature!
Please indeed confirm the app version you are using, we will investigate the issue!
-
@Rob-Verhoeff Thanks Rob, good to hear it is being worked on.
No I'm not using 3.2.8-151.
In the app version number states 3.2.8-150How do I update? In the play store no update is available
Had to go somewhere tonight by car. Phone in a wired charger and normally indeed positive charging. Now, track recording and navigation: 2 crashes and negative charge. When I stopped navigating and kept recording track, positive charging, so issue is reproducable.
I do know you mentioned latest version might fix battery usage, but still wanted to inform that navigating seems to cause it, not the track recording. -
@Rolf-Aalders 3.2.8 is the latest! Android and iOS have a slightly different build number (150 vs 151).
Reading these messages it indeed has more to do with the navigation rather than the background tracking. We’ll investigate!

@Corjan-Meijerink thanks!
Let me know if you need more info! Happy to help! -
My contribution to the topic "battery charging". I drove a short distance today with the bike and Navigation Next. At the start I had a battery charge of 73%, at the finish was 64%. The route is 3.4 km long and of course only takes a few minutes. Equipment: iPhone 13 pro, iOS version 16.3.
-
Also tested battery drain this morning on my OnePlus 6T with Android 11 and MRA Next 3.2.8-150 installed. A half hour 25 km tour (no tracking) dropped the battery level with 9% without charging.
-
@Mopetenpit @Arno-0 Now that’s a significant different between you two. I would like to say that the Android experience is more or less reasonable battery consumption. The iOS usage is however more than you would expect.
-
Its exactly what I experienced. Large baterry draining despite phone on charger (you have my report)
-
I plan today to do 150km, I will reset all the counters and start with 100% battery and on charger. Will post results

Today no navigation, but onbly tracking a route by bycicle. Let the screenshots speak for itself.
Started tracking at 96% battery capacity. Distance 15km; time 40minutes.
Halfway, 1% background activity
After 30km's end of tracking. 90 minutes pause in between two trackings and only 3% use of background activity.
Batterycondition is 100%.
Looks good so far. Resumé: tracked with the app for 90 minutes and stood on standby for 90 minutes.
iPhone 13
iOS 16.3.1
App-buid: 3.2.8 - 151 -
@Rob-Verhoeff That's very decent! Thanks for sharing the information

Première sortie à moto avec la version beta :
Samsung Galaxy S21 FE 5G - Android 13 Batterie 4.500 mAh

@Willy-DEOM Thanks for sharing the feedback and further information. We will continue investigating the issue.

@Corjan-Meijerink Just been on a run today with my iPhone 8 Plus (iOS 16.3.1) and there was no drain on battery whilst tracking, navigating and screen recording. Indeed, the charge increased to 100% as the ride went on. I was using a cable from auxiliary socket to the Lightning Port to charge and i will check wireless charge performance on the bike next time I am out on it. No issues with drain from my perspective.
-
@Dave-J-0 Thanks for confirming another side of this issue! I just drove for 45 minutes with full screen brightness, tracking on and using the nee navigation.
Battery usage was 15% which is pretty decent. When using Google Maps this morning during a 35 minute ride, the battery usage was 11% which is very similar.
My device is an iPhone 12 Pro Max.

@Corjan-Meijerink
Indeed that sounds acceptable! I don't mind the battery use when not charging. But when charging there should still be a positive charge, else the risk of running out of battery during a ride is too high. That should not be the case, right? -
@Rolf-Aalders That indeed really should not be the case!

@Corjan-Meijerink here my battery usage today. Used MRA between 7:30 and 9 and 4:30 and 6. My battery doesn’t like cold weather and this morning was ccccolddd (1 degree Celsius and fog). I think this is ok. My phone (iPhone 7) is always on the charger when driving. I do have background location set to “when using app” because I noticed several crashes when not even using MRA and quite some battery usage.
