Locking down a route with automated addition of shaping points
-
Here's something I think would be useful.
Often I create a route on the planner, with a handful of via points and one or two shaping points, and I think "Perfect, that's the route I want to take". I then put it on my Nav 6, head off, and the Nav decides it has much better ideas (often pot-holed, moss-covered farm tracks, but that's another story).
The general advice on the forums is "Add more shaping points to force the Nav to stick to the route". So now I have maybe a 250-mile route with 5 vias points, and I go through and add 15-20 shaping points in an effort to force the Nav to take the same route.
What would be great would be a menu option to Add X Shaping points, and MRA would automatically add some logical shaping points on the existing track for me. It could even name them all "SP" or "SP1, SP2" etc. so they are clearly automatic shaping points.
This would allow me to create a route with a minimum number of actual via points, but still be relatively confident any device would stick to that route.
If the frequency of automatic shaping points could be altered, that would be even better. The more SPs, the messier the map but the more likely the exact route would be adhered too.
Finally, an option to remove the automatic SPs would be the icing on the cake.

@Tim-Watson Have a look in Toolkit and you will find the possibility to add the number of shaping points of your choice.
-
i was just about to write that,
click tool kit then click expand you can add as many as you want
sorry quick edit, gold membership required
-
@Rob-Veerman Wow. Thanks guys!
I don't know if my main feeling is excitement because a feature I really want is actually available, or embarrassment that I've had gold membership for years and never seen that feature!
-
@Tim-Watson Your membership is now even more golden. Always have a quick check if the added shaping points are put on the correct side of the road. But if you check the distance of your route before you add the extra points and and the distance is still the same you may expect them to have been put the correct way.

it's all a learning curve, nothing wrong with asking, this is the beauty of the forum.

@paul69, keep in mind though that with the automatic addition of waypoints, those added waypoints need te be reviewed (moved ON the road, away from exits, roundabouts and junctions, things like that). Therefore I usually do things manually.

good morning @Con-Hennekens
yes indeed I completely agree with that, although, i do not use this feature, it was for the benefit of the OP.
when i make i route i probably zoom in and check every way/via point multiple times before my route is finalised.
I found this out the hard way when I first started using MRA and in the early days of using my Zumo. -
Thanks again guys.
Don't worry, I'm used to double-checking and triple-checking all the waypoints.
I'm sure we've all had an A to B route that we've reversed B to A only to find it's miles longer because the waypoints are now in the wrong carriageway and the route is going back and forth between motorway junctions...
