Shared routes, different devices
-
I share routes with another user for motorcycle touring we do each year in Western Europe.
I switch between maps when routing, Michelin maybe in Germany (where Google street view does not work) then maybe in Google maps, as the interface is good, use the street view etc (france..)
I have been exporting to my Samsung Note 9, gpx1.1 format.
The routes look OK in the BMW connected app....routes to be tested...
I also had Tomtom app on the phone. ( routes not recognised, to be re visited depending on feedback)My friend uses a Garmin unit, I will be using the Note 9 in the BMW connected cradle.
So a couple of questions;
We have multiple waypoints on all routes to stop re calculation, all road types allowed on the navigation systems...
Is there any other reason why they should not follow the same routes exactly?
If I re instal Tomtom app (removed today after getting annoyed with it!)
Do I need to view my route on the Tomtom map, then export as gpx1.1?
Will this be the same route?
The waypoints look the same on all maps..placed to stop the sat nav making choices and force a turn at every junction. All zoomed in to check for mis placed waypoints (wrong side of motorway etc.)Thanks in advance

Hi Jim,
If you make your routes in MRA, set a waypoint every 4 to 5 KM. Also enable the option(s) compare route with: TomTom & OSM. If you use the Here card, you will also see a red line (TomTom) and a blue line (OSM). If you put the waypoints in those locations where all 3 lines meet, you can be sure that most systems will work fine. If one of the 2 extra lines does not want to go over the road you selected, there may be something wrong that needs further investigation, such as: Is there a road on the TomTom or OSM map? Is the road not closed (traffic layer, bottom option at the map layers, but a gold account is required)
If you do it this way, the routes will be 99.9% fine and the other users will have the same route.

@james-blythe My motorcycle friend has a TomTom, and I have a Garmin. The way we enter the (shared) routes in our device(s), is to import the track into the device, not the route. Doing it this way already several years now, we have hardly ever had differences. Indeed, differences mostly (only) occur when on one of both devices doesn't have a navigable road where the other one does have one.
This way of working (i.e. using the track rather than the original route) is less labour-intensive than the one explained above by Hans above (and I may be wrong, but I think there's a smaller chance of resulting into different routes). On the other hand, it has one disadvantage which may be your show-stopper : you lose the POI's of your original route(s). If you want to have the POI's available in the routes, you have to do it the way Hans explains.
But irrespective of the way you put the route(s) in your devices : to me, riding the same route with a TomTom and a Garmin together is combining the best of the 2 worlds, we hardly ever have problems finding a way around any event on our route (like deviations, road works, or the likes).

The big advantage is that MRA has both the route and the track in the gpx file (except for the option "save as gpx 1.1 (Track , POI)"
