purchased the Gold Lifetime Membership yesterday. Loaded the Nzvigation app. But it won't let md use it. Says I have to purchase 3 years for $39.99.

Helle Mark, Gold and Navigation are 2 separate things, which you also have to purchase separately, or in an all-in One package.
