I’ve tried both clicking and ALT+clicking for waypoint n.2 on the map at the exact same spots; the generated route appears to be identical.
Could you explain in detail what the difference is?

You need more than 2 points.
If you now clicked on a cafe in Oberdrauburg, waypoint 3 would appear and it will route you from waypoint 2.
If you ALT+Click, the route will take you to that point on the way, it will become waypoint 2 and your existing 2 will become 3.
I find if l have a lot of points, say 60, then if i click on something along the way it will add at 61 and i have to drag it back up the list to where I want it. The normal way would then be to click on the route till you get the + sign and drag it to the cafe (or whatever). Now you don't have to, just Alt-Click on the cafe -

Thanks for the feedback.
I tried what you suggested and now I understand the difference and how it works essentially, ALT+click adjusts the waypoint along the route in a way that makes logical sense for travel.
