Am I doing something wrong?

Planned a route and downloaded it for offline use and selected it from my downloads.
When starting to navigate a notice said "can not calculate offline. Go online?" I could do this because I was still at home and within wi fi range. This done, it worked perfectly for the whole route. However if I had not been within wi fi range initialy it would have been unuseable.
I notice that some offline problems have been corrected for the public release so maybe it's been taken care of.

@Roger-Doidge Perhaps a silly question, but have you also downloaded the map(s) for the region through which your route passes?

@Rob-Verhoeff I've never been prompted to do that,so the answer is no, I haven't downloaded any maps. The route was only about 50 km in my local area.
I was not aware that specific maps had to be downloaded or how to do that.
