Route Planning on the fly for the Garmin XT
-
I've used MRA for route planning for several years, setting up routes using the browser interface on a PC. All the routes end up downloaded to my Garmin XT using the GPX 1.1 format.
Today I found a spot for breakfast, and over coffee I created a nice afternoon ride on my phone using the MRA web app. I was able to export it to my Garmin and I was ready to roll. I found the route in the Trip Planner, and selected 'Closest Entry Point' as Next Destination.
The Garmin routed me directly to my destination, ignoring my shaping points. I checked the Track, and saw that the intended route was accurate as a track. This was a good lesson, the Track routing is not altered by the Garmin. But of course you lose things like arrival time and turn-by-turn navigation.
I've not had this issue using the web app on my PC. I'm wondering what it is about this route that prevented 'Closest Entry Point" to ignore the entire route. I was wondering if the approximate location of the shaping points entered on a phone could be an issue.
I've made the route public, and here is the link. I'd appreciate any comments!

@Don-Stauffer I don't use a garmin so I don't know the intricacies of transferring from MRA to Garmin. I did look at your route. 2, 3 & 4 are quite a ways off the route. 6 & 9 almost appear to be accidental detours resulting in u-turns. I don't know if that was intentional. Otherwise I don't see any issues with route.

@Don-Stauffer how did you transfer thé route, with Garmin Drive. You could also use thé 1.2 export.
Like retired wingman said thé shaping points must be ON thé route. Did you place the starting viapoint not at thé place you had your coiffée but just it bit further Waay?
Planning on a phone is somewhat dificult and takes Some practicing -
if the track is correct then there is always the option to convert the track in a route in your xt. still you only have start and end but this can work.
what i do not understand why you not started te route to begin.

@RetiredWingMan Yes, the routing points were somewhat inaccurate, as I was placing them using my phone. The 'accidents' you see were probably the results of routing to a town, I found that to be an easy way to route over secondary roads.

Hi @Don-Stauffer,
I think what you are experiencing is a known bug with the XT where when it is having trouble calculating an entry piont it discards all Shaping points & routes to the next Via piont which in your case may be the final destinationI had similar issues last year using an XT, so it now sits in the bottom of a drawer & I am using MRA Navigation as IMO the XT is pretty much useless as a sat nav as it has a mind of its own when recalculate is on.
